Abstract

This paper describes the philosophy and software architecture of microcomputer based information and decision support systems for environmental planning and management. These systems combine database management, system simulation, operations research techniques such as optimization, and interactive data analysis, with a friendly, symbolic and display oriented user interface. Designed with and around the operating system UNIX, a prototype application from the field of water resources management, regional development, and environmental protection is briefly described.
