Abstract

The “Agenda 2030” of the United Nations with its sustainability goals and the “Green Deal” of the European Union are a great gift to humanity: They outline an ambitious vision of how just and inclusive change can succeed without leaving anyone behind. At the same time, they show how to reduce the negative effects on our planet to make it a safer place, because humanity is at a crossroads. The historical direction of development, which some call "business as usual", but which would be better defined as "counterfactual", destroys the foundations that made human progress and development possible in the first place. There is now a great deal of scientific evidence that we cannot go any further because the climate is changing: permafrost soils and ice sheets are melting, species and natural forests are disappearing.
