Project: The Platform for Sharing, Initiating, and Learning Citizen Science in Europe (EU-Citizen.Science, H2020 824580)

Abstract

What is citizen science (CS)? This seems to be a simple question – yet, answers do vary considerably depending on whom you ask and where the term is applied. It might be different for a CS project platform that wants to represent the diversity of initiatives than for a research funding organization with a dedicated environmental mission. And even individual values and perceptions play a considerable role that might not always be explicit. The workshop invites participants to reflect on and discuss their understanding of CS along pre-selected case descriptions of initiatives that represent specific overarching factors (e.g. purpose, compensation, data sharing) regarding CS. The vignettes are taken from the ‘ECSA Characteristics of Citizen Science’ (Haklay et al., 2020) which have been developed through an intense discussion process with the community. The workshop consists of (i) an interactive part where moderators will facilitate a discussion between participants (ii) input on the process that led to the characteristics and presentation of the results of the process. The interactive part will be a fishbowl format where 2-4 participants start a moderated discussion around a case study. Other participants can join in if they wish.
