Abstract

Two North American specialists on the forest economy of the Russian Federation examine factors contributing to the growing volume of forest-product exports from the Russian forest sector to the People's Republic of China. The authors initially review the dynamics of domestic production within Russia and China, before surveying emerging trade patterns in pulpwood, sawlogs, lumber, and paper products. The advantages and disadvantages confronting Chinese importers in trade with Russia are identified. Also presented is an evaluation of future prospects for trade in forest products between the two countries over the near term and an assessment of policy implications.
