AB Indonesia, was studied in 1953 and revisited in 1985. Provides a detailed picture of social and economic change over three decades, during which the village grew in population by 60%. Topics covered include food prices and diet, agricultural institutions, nonagricultural activities, village government, schooling, access to the media, social mobility, the position of women, and family structure. Improvements in technology and evolving social relations have both been important in generating gains in prosperity. Higher productivity has not lessened employment opportunities. Patron-client ties have been supplanted by monetized labour relations.
