These dependency ratios take into account not only the demographic structure of the population, but also the differences in age-specific economic behaviour such as labour market activity, income and consumption as well as age-specific public transfers. In selected simulations where we combine patterns of age-specific economic behaviour and transfers with population projections, we show that in all countries population ageing would lead to a pronounced increase in dependency ratios if present age-specific patterns were not to change. Our analysis of cross-country differences in economic dependency demonstrates that these differences are driven by both differences in age-specific economic behaviour and in the age composition of the populations. The choice of which dependency ratio to use in a specific policy context is determined by the nature of the question to be answered. The comparison of our various dependency ratios across countries gives insights into which strategies might be effective in mitigating the expected increase in economic dependency due to demographic change. date: 2017-07 date_type: published publisher: Springer id_number: 10.1007/s10680-016-9405-1 creators_browse_id: 186 creators_browse_id: 100 full_text_status: public publication: European Journal of Population volume: 33 number: 3 pagerange: 351–-380 refereed: TRUE issn: 0168-6577 projects: Welfare, Wealth and Work for Europe (WWWFOREUROPE, FP7 290647) projects: Ageing Europe: An application of National Transfer Accounts (NTA) for explaining and projecting trends in public (AGENTA, FP7 613247) coversheets_dirty: FALSE fp7_project: yes fp7_project_id: info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/EC/FP7/290647/EU/Welfare, Wealth and Work for Europe/WWWFOREUROPE; info:eu-repo/grantAgreement/EC/FP7/613247/EU/Ageing Europe: An application of National Transfer Accounts (NTA) for explaining and projecting trends in public/AG fp7_type: info:eu-repo/semantics/article access_rights: info:eu-repo/semantics/closedAccess citation: Loichinger, E. , Hammer, B., Prskawetz, A. , Freiberger, M., & Sambt, J.
