Yet, many countries still do not have well-defined criteria on how to define EF. In this study, we bring together the International Water Management Institute’s (IWMI’s) expertise and previous research in this area to develop a new methodology to quantify EF at a global scale. EF are developed for grids (0.1 degree spatial resolution) for different levels of health (defined as environmental management classes [EMCs]) of river sections. Additionally, EF have been separated into surface water and groundwater components, which also helps in developing sustainable groundwater abstraction (SGWA) limits. An online tool has been developed to calculate EF and SGWA in any area of interest. date: 2017 date_type: published publisher: International Water Management Institute (IWMI), id_number: 10.5337/2017.201 official_url: http://www.iwmi.cgiar.org/publications/iwmi-research-reports/ iiasapubid: 10.5337/2017.201 creators_browse_id: 2601 full_text_status: public publication: IWMI Research Report volume: 168 place_of_pub: Colombo, Sri Lanka pagerange: 1-39 pages: 42 refereed: TRUE isbn: 978-92-9090-847-0 issn: 1026-0862 related_url_url: http://www.iwmi.cgiar.org/Publications/IWMI_Research_Reports/PDF/pub168/rr168.pdf related_url_type: publ funders: This research was carried out as part of the CGIAR Research Program on Water, Land and Ecosystems (WLE) and supported by CGIAR Fund Donors (http://www.cgiar.org/ who-weare/cgiar-fund/fund-donors-2). coversheets_dirty: FALSE fp7_project: no fp7_type: info:eu-repo/semantics/article citation: Sood, A., Smakhtin, V., Eriyagama, N., Villholth, K.G., Liyanage, N., Wada, Y.
