        abstract = {From a spatial point of view, the topic of environmental quality deals with the mutual adjustment of different societal claims in the spatial setting, aiming at the development and/or maintenance of adequate conditions for quality of life. Since 1950, the population, and in particular the number of households, in the Netherlands have increased considerably, postulating large demands to housing and residential land use. In this paper, major demographic, land use, and housing trends in the Netherlands since 1950 are outlined in order to discern the magnitude and importance of these changes at the present time. Attention is paid to changes regarding the availability of residential space in general, and of living space within the house.},
