Since 1950, the population, and in particular the number of households, in the Netherlands have increased considerably, postulating large demands to housing and residential land use. In this paper, major demographic, land use, and housing trends in the Netherlands since 1950 are outlined in order to discern the magnitude and importance of these changes at the present time.
