Conventional theories within economics and geography are discussed, and some new ideas are introduced. For example, the value of physical capital in a welfare society is now so large that it will slow down net migration. Finally, contemporary progress in research is discussed. New methods will make it possible to understand macrofeatures of interlinked processes from models using microdata. New empirical findings show decreasing net migration figures in many countries which is in accordance with theories on the relation with migration on the one hand, and the value of physical capital and/or a more stable local demand for services on the other.
