In doing so, we seek to contribute to the analysis of the performance of transboundary environmental cooperation, and to gain insights that may be relevant to environmental cleanup efforts in other international river basins. We conclude that international efforts have only modestly and indirectly contributed to pollution reductions, and that, in the Rhine case, informal approaches to problem solving have been more effective than formal approaches. We also find that liability frameworks may contribute toward pollution reductions, but are, even under favorable conditions, of very limited effectiveness. date: 1996-12 date_type: published publisher: Sage id_number: 10.1177/107049659600500402 iiasapubid: XJ-96-057 iiasa_bibref: Journal of Environment & Development; 5(4):389-415 (December 1996) iiasa_bibnotes: [doi:10.1177/107049659600500402] full_text_status: none publication: Journal of Environment & Development volume: 5 number: 4 pagerange: 389-415 refereed: TRUE issn: 1070-4965 coversheets_dirty: FALSE fp7_type: info:eu-repo/semantics/article citation: Bernauer, T. & Moser, P.
