This is the central message of the three cases, sub-divided into six scenarios, that are presented in the comprehensive report of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis and World Energy Council joint study, Global Energy Perspectives to 2050 and beyond. The scenarios cover a wide range of global energy developments - from a massive expansion of coal production to strict limits, from a phase-out of nuclear energy to a substantial increase, from carbon emissions in 2100, that are at only one-third of today’s levels, to increases of more than a factor of three. Yet, for all the variations they explore among alternative energy systems, all manage to match the likely, continuing push by consumers for more flexible, more convenient and cleaner forms of energy. This paper summarises the financing requirements of the energy sector, in order to achieve these goals, with a particular emphasis on investment in the developing regions. date: 1996-03 date_type: published publisher: Wiley-Blackwell iiasapubid: XJ-96-031 iiasa_bibref: OPEC Review; XX(1):1-24 [1996] iiasa_bibnotes: Available as IIASA Reprint RP-96-009 creators_browse_id: 214 creators_browse_id: 256 full_text_status: none publication: OPEC Energy Review volume: XX number: 1 pagerange: 1-24 refereed: TRUE issn: 1753-0237 coversheets_dirty: FALSE fp7_type: info:eu-repo/semantics/article citation: Nakicenovic, N.
