This is the central message of the three cases, sub-divided into six scenarios, that are presented in the comprehensive report of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis and World Energy Council joint study, Global Energy Perspectives to 2050 and Beyond. The scenarios cover a wide range of global energy developments -- from a massive expansion of coal production to strict limits, from a phase-out of nuclear energy to a substantial increase, from carbon emissions in 2100, that are at only one-third of today's levels, to increases of more than a factor of three. Yet, for all the variations they explore among alternative energy systems, all manage to match the likely, continuing push by consumers for more flexible, more convenient and cleaner forms of energy. The paper summarizes the financing requirements of the energy sector, in order to achieve these goals, with a particular emphasis on investments in the developing regions.</mods:abstract><mods:originInfo><mods:dateIssued encoding="iso8601">1996</mods:dateIssued></mods:originInfo><mods:originInfo><mods:publisher>RR-96-009.
