The relationship between energy consumption and life style standards is not yet fully understood. Major studies in this field had failed to consider other variables than the Gross National Product. This article is made for a better understanding of the complex interface of life style and energy consumption.
Factor analyses, to quantify the relation between energy use and economic development, have been performed for 35 developed countries and for 15 OECD countries. Our measures of the relation between degrees of development and energy consumption may prove to be of more general applicability for forecasting than the widely used correlation between per capita energy consumption and per capita GNP.
