Abstract
After a brief historical review, the authors describe the major types of settlement (villages, small towns, the five county towns, and the capital Budapest) that exist in present-day Hungary. They discuss the continuing process of industrialization and the trend towards increased urbanization, as well as noting the relatively low fertility and high mortality rates of recent years. The various categories of migrant that may be distinguished in official Hungarian statistics (inter- or intra-regional, permanent or temporary), and the six economic planning regions of the country are explained in detail. A multiregional population analysis of the six-region system is presented, including population projections to the year 2024. The report ends with a discussion of Hungarian regional policy planning, past and present.
