Abstract

Justification for investment in flexible manufacturing systems has been grounded in the strategic benefits the latest production technology offers. Data on earlier installations is needed in order to justify future investment decisions.

This paper presents the results of an international study of the adoption of FM-systems. The aim of the research was to increase understanding of the cost-benefit structures of the technology, and the most important driving forces behind its diffusion in various countries.

A large amount of data has been gathered by using FMS questionnaires and by personal interviews. The systems have been analysed by roughly 300 features from technical, managerial, financial, operational and organizational points of view. The data was used to clarify the flexibility of integrated systems, and barriers to and factors accelerating FMS diffusion.

This paper is written mainly for managers responsible for technology development and strategies in production companies.
