Abstract

In the European part of the Soviet Union, large areas are characterized by a climate that is unfavorable for agricultural development. In the north of the area, as reported in the companion to this volume (Pitovranov et al., 1988), temperature is a limiting factor for many crops. In the south, one of the most detrimental factors is drought.
