Abstract

The differences between major analytical frameworks for rational decision-making as well as recent results in the study of cultural motivations for rationality show that decision makers might have various and often diverging perceptions. Thus, it is not possible to use models of decision-behavior that predict a unique outcome; a more realistic use of mathematical models must provide for means of interaction with real decision makers that would influence the selection of model solutions. Various principles for organizing such interaction might be possible; one particularly suggested here is the use of aspiration levels specified by the decision maker and guiding the selection of a model solution. The principle makes it also possible to formalize the concept of conflict escalation or de-escalation in game-theoretical models with multiple equilibria.
