Abstract
This report is part of a comparative analysis of national patterns of interregional migration and spatial population growth carried out by an international network of scholars who are using methodology and computer programs developed at IIASA.
In this report, Dr. Michael Sauberer, Director of the Austrian Institute for Regional Planning, shows how multiregional population analysis may be used to describe and analyze the changes taking place in the size and distribution of populations over time, with special reference to Austria. Adopting a two-level multiregional system (nine provinces and four regions) for his study, he demonstrates that it is important to consider the interdependence between the provinces when studying populations at the subnational level.
