Abstract

This chapter seeks to review approaches to and techniques in climate impact assessment, with particular reference to drought impacts. It looks at methodology, outlining definitions, concepts, and approaches to climate impact assessment in general. The chapter illustrates some techniques that are available for conducting impact analyses, drawing mainly from examples of studies conducted in agriculture. In an assessment of die impact of climatic variation on economies and societies, it is useful to make two broad distinctions: between approximate and proximate causes and between contingently necessary and contingently sufficient conditions. Government interest in climate impacts is largely a short-term concern. Many different types of models can be used to estimate biophysical sensitivity to climate. One intention of the hierarchical approach to climate impact assessment is to link models at different levels. Sectoral studies are conducted as a methodological and disciplinary convenience, because climate impacts are not likely to be restricted to a single sector of a regional economy.
