Abstract
In recent years, several countries in South Asia, especially India, have experienced fertility decline, which began to decline after the 1970s. However, now India’s fertility rates have reached the below replacement level.
We fist examine regional trends in fertility rates by female level of education. The main objective of this analysis was to understand the changes in fertility with increasing women’s levels of education.
We use the bivariate analysis to examine the regional fertility trends by level of female education. We also perform a demographic decomposition method, that was developed by Kitagawa (1955) and later modified by Bhat (2002), we used this decomposition method, to quantify the contribution of women’s education in reducing fertility.
