Abstract

Research shows that we already have the technologies needed to produce clean energy as well as enough food to feed the world. Sustainable development is within reach, but it requires all key actors in society to act together. Organizing such a collective action, however, remains a major challenge.

Societal decision-making systems and processes determine the space for action and interaction of all societal actors including policymakers and politicians, businesses, and citizenry. Sustainable development requires that societal decision-making systems and processes enable and facilitate transformation in the direction of more sustainable production and consumption, rather than being obstructive.
