Abstract
In IIASA's work on demographic population dynamics and stochastic optimization, certain purely mathematical problems emerge that have contributed to an increase in the understanding of population evolution. The authors' work, which uses Kingman's theory on the log-convexity of the spectral radius, Lie's product formula, and perturbation theory, is an example of such results.
