Years 2019 and 2020 of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) large-scale initiative “Challenges and Opportunities of Economic Integration within a Wider European and Eurasian Space” were dedicated to exploring digital connectivity in Eurasia. Workshops and meetings were organized, bringing together experts, policymakers, and business representatives in order to discuss how to promote connectivity, strengthen economic ties and create new business opportunities through new technologies and digitalization. They revealed a huge potential for cooperation in the Eurasian region that remains largely untapped. This paper contributes to a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities of digital cooperation in Eurasia. It summarizes the international dimensions of the digitalization strategies of the European Union (EU), the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), and China, examines already existing cooperation projects in the area of digitalization, identifies barriers, and offers several policy recommendations for overcoming them, and for strengthening digital cooperation in the region.
