Abstract

Staying within the safe and just planetary boundary of phosphorus in China at the river-basin scale requires a systemic management strategy for the livestock sector.
Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient for growing crops, which makes its continuous supply crucial for global food security. Owing to the increased application of P fertilizer on croplands, the global sum of P in harvested crop products has more than doubled during 1961–2019. However, the overuse or misapplication of P in agriculture has led to its excessive runoff and leaching into watercourses, which in turn gives rise to nutrient pollution, posing a substantial threat to the well-being of aquatic organisms and ultimately human health.
