Serving as a prior for atmospheric inversions, emissions of a set of climate relevant trace constituents have been provided using IIASA’s GAINS model. Compounds covered are non-CO2 greenhouse gases (CH4, N2O and a selection of 6 fluorinated gases, specifically HFC-125, HFC-134a, HFC-143a, HFC-23, HFC-32 and SF6) and black carbon aerosol. Data is provided in NetCDF format annually for the time range 1990 – 2020, in monthly resolution (fluorinated gases start from 2005 and have annual resolution). Spatially, data covers the European Union plus the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Norway, resolved to an 0.1°x0.1° grid. Emissions are attributed to the respective source categories according to GNFR.
Further details are available in an accompanying report (EYE-CLIMA Deliverable 2.8). Within a few weeks after data publication, the report will be made available on the project's web page at https://eyeclima.eu/products/public-reports/. The report also includes uncertainty estimates by source category, based on emission inventory experience. Also the limitations and potentials of the approaches taken are discussed in the report.
This is version 1.0 of the dataset. It is meant to be updated to extend the coverage into the year 2023 to allow up-to-date inversions within EYE-CLIMA. Emissions of emitted compounds are provided as kg/m²/s. File names follow the notation developed for the H-Europe project EYE-CLIMA, i.e. species _ variable-type _ sector _ region _ method (MOD=model) _ timestep _ fromTime _ toTime _ model _ institute _ version . filetype. Note that sector "AWB" stands for Agricultural Waste Burning, which is provided separately from other sources for BC and CH4. A previous version (v0.9) has been made available on Zenodo,it represents the same data but in different units (kt per grid cell and year (or month, respectively) and using a different file notation. As that dataset has been used within the consortium already, it also is being kept as a citable source.
