Abstract

Industrial fertilizer production consumes most of the phosphate rock mined and processed at commercial levels from naturally occurring deposits of phosphate-bearing rocks. While global assessments of production volumes and reserves are available at the national level, such data do not include site- and resource use-specific information on the material balance for the phosphate mining and processing sector. In this paper, we contribute to filling this gap by presenting an open global dataset which includes contemporary data records on the p2O5 grades of mined and beneficiated resource and on the recovery rates of beneficiation process disaggregated at the subnational level. The gathered primary data highlight heterogeneity in resources and resource use efficiencies within the geographically concentrated phosphorus supply base. Our results assess changes in material consumption when domestic supply replaces imports from major international companies, whether for national security concerns or supply chain disruptions. The site-specific phosphorus loss estimates reveal recovery and recycling potential at mining and beneficiation. Furthermore, the evaluation of GHG emissions provides a starting point for a more explicit assessment of the extent of negative environmental impacts associated with phosphate mining and beneficiation.
