Abstract

During the past two years, the author has been bringing his very considerable statistical talents to bear on the design of environmental monitoring systems and on the analysis of experimental data in the environmental sciences. In this particular Working Paper, he has examined the concept of "kriging", a method used to recover spatial patterns from point measurements, first applied in the geological sciences. Unfortunately, environmental fields usually vary in time as well as space. This leads to severe difficulties which have not been fully realized by environmental scientists. The nature of these difficulties is elaborated in this paper.
