Abstract
This paper begins by examining from a theoretical perspective how we need to analyze land if we are to plan to achieve sustainable development. It then proceeds to identify which are the key biophysical and socio-economic variables to support this approach. The considerations of spatial framework are then addressed and a supply/constraint modeling procedure is proposed. The paper ends with an examination of the use of such an approach to test different scenarios within a land supply/demand framework.
