Abstract

This paper reviews the "competitiveness" debate from several points of view and then focuses attention on the longer-term prospects for US manufacturers. It concludes that, because US firms have had an earlier start in learning to use computers, leading-edge US firms are well situated to lead the way to fully computerized automation or "computer-integrated manufacturing". The current evidence is mixed but not inconsistent with the possibility that US-based manufacturers will be able to regain some lost ground in the next decade.
