Abstract

This paper gives a brief but systematic overview of topics in "mathematical immunology" and may be considered as an introduction to a new IIASA activity on these topics. Theoretical and experimental research in this area is aimed at an understanding of the precise manner by which the immune system controls (or attempts to control) infectious diseases and diseases such as AIDS and cancer. Available mathematical methods, the difficulties arising in the respective problems, and some possibilities to overcome them are discussed.
