Abstract

The global character of environmental problems has accelerated the need for international negotiations on environmental issues. The contributors to this timely volume examine the development of international negotiations on environmental issues and strive to extend a new approach to international negotiations -- an approach that takes into account the complex interrelationships of modern society. They first develop a simple, conceptual framework intended to clarify the distinctive attributes of international environmental negotiations. The framework is then applied by experts in the environmental field to a series of case analyses covering a broad range of issues, including climate change, ozone depletion, desertification, acid rain, sea pollution, and biological diversity.

The volume is essential reading for scholars and students in urban and environmental studies, international relations, law, international business, regional and global studies, and other disciplines where conflict and negotiation are considered. One of the objectives of the international editorial board, consisting of senior negotiation researchers, has been to draw lessons for practice. Policy makers, scientific experts, and intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations worldwide will also appreciate this focus.
