Abstract

Modernization of the rural economy, the restructuring of state-owned enterprises and changing demographics present an immediate need for reform of the social security system in China. Major challenges come from the rapidly rising unemployment and an increasing proportion of elderly due to the one-child policy. An adequate solution of the social security issue is vital for a stable economic as well as political development in China.
