Abstract
This paper is concerned with the intricate interrelation between urban and rural development. Particular attention is paid to suburbanization processes and mobility patterns, with an emphasis on the links between spatial structures and the development of settlement patterns.
In addition, a formal analysis is presented which investigates the determinants of mobility behavior and consequences of the latter for a settlement system. Next, a variety of entropy hypotheses is introduced to estimate the most probable spatial flows in a settlement system.
Finally, an integrated behavioral entropy approach is proposed as a reasonable method to fill in the "black box" of a settlement pattern and its associated spatial flows.
The analysis is illustrated by means of an empirical study of one of the Dutch provinces.
