Abstract

The research develops the concept of the seasonal lag-1 Markov chain for modelling a sequence of river flow values in consecutive "seasons", a "season" being of arbitrary duration, e.g. 5 days, 1 month, etc. Methods are developed and utilized to obtain the probability distribution of recurrence times and first passage times in such chains, and it is shown how to use these results to obtain the distribution of the waiting time to the next occurrence of a specified storage level in a reservoir subject to an inflow process of the kind considered.
