Human civilization, since the advent of the Industrial Revolution, has been built on increasing availability of affordable and secure energy, and the technological and institutional capacity to meet basic energy service needs, such as cooking, heating, industrial processing and mobility. Without adequate energy, modern society, as we know it, would not be possible. Recent developments have focused public attention on the energy situation in terms of security of supply, both natural gas and oil, and the need to respond to climate change. In total, energy is the key area for action to address in the 21st century, with many significant and growing concerns.
