In order to certify the performance of box-type solar cookers, thermal performance evaluation has been carried out in terms of two figures of merit viz. F1 and F2 (IS 13429: 2000). The acceptable criterion to make the solar cooker eligible for the Indian Standards ISI mark is that the value of F1 should not be less than 0.11, and that of F2 should be greater than 0.40. Further, the solar cooker Is classified as "Grade A" If the value of F1 is determined to be 0.12 or higher; otherwise, it is classified as "Grade B". Determination of F1 and F2 comprises measurements of the associated climatic as well as operating parameters viz. temperatures of the cooking tray, water and ambient air, solar irradiance, mass of the water as load, dimensions of the cooker, etc. The effect of accuracy in these measurements assumes significance regarding grading of solar cookers. This paper analyses the effect of instrumentation which is normally employed for the testing on solar cookers of the values of F1 and F2. The analysis is supported by a large number of outdoor tests conducted on a box-type solar cooker, under stagnation as well as load test conditions, at the location of the Solar Energy Center, Gwalpahari (latitude: 28.17 degrees N) round the year. The overall error due to instrumentation associated in determining F1 and F2 has been estimated by using the root sum square method. It has been observed that the variation of the absolute value of errors in F1 and F 2 is in the range of 0.002 to 0.003 and 0.015 to 0.033, respectively. This corresponds to errors of the order of 2.5 to 3% in evaluation of F 1 and 5.0 to 6.0% in F2.
