Abstract

The size and rate of growth of the world's population over the next 50 to 100 years is critically important for the well-being of the planet. This book contains the most authoritative assessment available of the extent to which population growth is likely to grow over that period.

This volume provides a thorough analysis of the components of population change -- fertility, mortality and migration -- and translates these factors into a series of projections for the population of 12 world regions. The projections, compiled by leading international demographers, are the first to explicitly take into account possible environmental limits to population growth, and to consider a range of other germane factors, such as the impact of AIDS. These new, alternative scenarios differ significantly from those already available from the UN and the World Bank, and are likely to become the benchmarks for future discussion of population.
