Abstract

A group of 24 river basin specialists gathered in Moscow from October 21-24 1997, for the `NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Sustainable Management of Transboundary Watercourses: Theory and Practice.' A comparative data of eight European and Asian river basins was compiled to assess similar information in aiding sustainable river basin management around the world. This include Rhine, Danube, Odra, Douro, Dneiper, Dneistr, Amu-Darya and Sry-Darya rivers. Other key themes include water law principles, ecosystem orientation and climate change impacts on water resources. The idea of sustainable development indicators were grouped under three headings namely water use, water quality, and ecosystems and natural resources.
