Abstract

Forest soil science as a scientific discipline was formed during the expedition of the Forest Department, organized by V.V. Dokuchaev. His ideas about the effect of tree species on soils and soil-tree interactions served as the basis for forest typology and forest soil science. Peculiarities in the structure of forest ecosystems and prolonged effects of logging and wildfires force the forest soils to develop properties that differ from the soils of other ecosystems.
