Abstract

Contribution to the Metropolitan Study: 16 -- The Metropolitan Development Project was initiated in 1983 as a collaborative study. In 1984 efforts have been concentrated on creating a methodological basis for a more focused research phase starting in 1985. One of the priorities is to analyze the contact and accessibility problems of metropolitan regions.

This paper contains an empirical study of differences in airline contact potentials of a large number of European metropolitan regions. The calculations show that accessibility as defined is very high in Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Zurich, and West Berlin, while being remarkably inferior to Vienna, Rome, Madrid and Stockholm. With the exception of East Berlin, Warsaw and Moscow, Eastern Europe has lower European accessibility than Greece and Portugal. Analyses of metropolitan development possibilities will profit from the use of these measurements.
